Captain Michael Dodd

Captain Dodd grew up in Baltimore and spent many years exploring the nooks and crannies of the Chesapeake Bay.   He has owned numerous sailboats and power boats which he used to explore the beautiful waters of the Bay.

In 2020, he and his wife, Maureen, decided to go on a methodical exploration of the Bay on their Hatteras motor yacht “Time Out.”  They started in Baltimore and cruised south to Hampton, Virginia.  Their southern jaunt included the Potomac River and a three-day visit to Washington, D.C.

At the southernmost part of the Bay, they crossed to the Eastern Shore and headed north. They cruised as far as the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, then crossed the northern Bay to Havre de Grace and headed south back to Baltimore.  The entire journey took 35 days and was so fascinating that Captain Dodd put it into book form.

Suicide Run To Archangel

This historical novel is based on a true story about the author’s uncle, Jack Dodd, who served on the Liberty Ship, Esek Hopkins, during World War II. Liberty ships were delivering critical cargo to the UK and Russia in their battle against the Germans.

During the journey to the port of Archangel, Russia, the convoy stopped in Scotland. There, Jack fell in love with a Scottish lass. But duty called and he was compelled to depart on the most dangerous part of the trip.

During the late summer of 1942 his convoy, PQ-18, was attacked by German U-boats and the Luftwaffe over a period of several days.

His harrowing experiences were documented in his personal diary. The author used Jack’s diary as the backbone of this story of romance in Scotland and terror on the high seas.
